Toxicity test. Select/develop measurements of fire effluents toxicity under fire design fire conditions

The gases emitted by a polymer may contain substances that, when inhaled, cause:

  • mucous membranes irritation
  • blockage of nerve centres and mobility
  • loss of consciousness
  • death

The gas emitted quantities and their combinations are therefore an aspect of the product to be known and declared where required. The main tests to identify the composition of the gases emitted by the polymers with regard to their chemical compositions and to the combinations of the whole gases potentially emitted, we find them in the following standards:

IEC 60695-7-1 “Fire hazard testing - Part 7-1: Toxicity of fire effluent - General guidance”

IEC 60695-7-2 “Fire hazard testing - Part 7-2: Toxicity of fire effluent - Summary and relevance of test methods”

IEC 60695-7-3 “Fire hazard testing - Part 7-3: Toxicity of fire effluent - Use and interpretation of test results”
